Latin Name: Citrus Aurantifolia Part of Plant Used: Fruit Peel Source: Mexico Extraction Method: Cold Expression This Lime Essential Oil is derived from Citrus aurantifolia, commonly known as Mexican or West Indian lime, or sour lime. The oil is extracted from the peel of unripe limes through cold expression or from the peel and/or whole ripe fruit via steam distillation. Lime oil has a sharp, citrus scent that instantly lifts the mood and is typically pale yellow to light olive in color. When used in an oil burner, lime oil helps stimulate a tired mind and can ease anxiety, apathy, and depression. It is beneficial in reducing fevers associated with colds, sore throats, and flu. The oil supports the immune system while alleviating symptoms of coughs, bronchitis, sinusitis, and asthma. It may also assist with conditions like arthritis, rheumatism, poor circulation, obesity, and cellulite. Lime essential oil is excellent for the skin as it reduces oiliness and acne, and can also help with herpes, insect bites, and cuts. However, the oil obtained through cold expression may cause photosensitivity and skin irritation. Originally from Asia, limes are now grown in many warm countries, including Italy, the West Indies, and the Americas. They start green and ripen to yellow, typically measuring about two inches in diameter. The lime was introduced to Europe by the Moors and later spread to the Americas. Despite having a lower Vitamin C content than lemons, limes were once carried on long voyages to prevent scurvy due to Vitamin C deficiency.
